A rock musical, the life of genderqueer East German Hedwig Robinson, the child of a U.S. Army major general chronicles the world of glam rock, androgynous rock stars of the 70’s like David Bowie, punk performers Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, as well as the work of John Lennon. Hedwig was inspired by Mitchell’s real-life babysitter from Junction City, KS who was a divorced German army wife and moonlighted as a prostitute in her trailer park home. Not specifically transgender, Hedwig opens doors to her past, to the present, to her future.
