Based on the 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker, the musical follows the life of an African-American woman from the south, Celie, and her journey from early to mid-20th century. A story about the relationships between men and women, how society expects men and women to act, what qualifies as masculine and feminine, and what limits does society place on how men and women can act.
"Don't Let Them Run Over You. You Got To Fight."
-Nettie, THE COLOR PURPLE
THE COLOR PURPLE is set in the time period from 1909-1945 and is a story about redemption. The spine of the production for me was that the life you save just might be your own. The perseverance, the ability to withstand abuse from within your own culture, the patience to realize your true potential were all concepts within the storyline that resonated with me.
Then, the music of THE COLOR PURPLE, with its roots in blues, jazz, gospel and swing was joyous, poignant, and truth-telling. The addition of African music and dance was inherently important to the story.
Finally, working with the sheer talent associated with the production from cast to creative was nothing short of a real pleasure. Adding performances with 20 of 21 sold out performances was a true bonus.
